Cycle 4, Week 1

Greetings, Grade 5 Parents!

The scheduling this week was a bit odd, and we were still missing a few students, but we made good progress with new units in all subjects.

In literacy, students reviewed the concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos that we used in our media literacy unit before the April break. After that, we began reading some persuasive texts from a book entitled “Should There be Zoos?”, in which students wrote researched persuasive essays either for or against zoos.  Next week we will continue to read more persuasive texts and examine the structure of the author’s argument in order to apply the lessons to our future persuasive writing.

In a continuation of the decimals and fractions unit we worked on before the break, the students began to look at percentages.  In particular, we looked at how fractions and decimals convert to percentages.  Next week, we’ll consider how to apply percentages to taxes and discounts.

Our Body Systems thematic began in a flash.  Students selected their body system and began researching them.  Next week, the students will teach the class with their body system mini-lessons.

In Bahasa Indonesia the theme is learning vocabulary to do with our body parts.  Students engaged in games and activities to solidify their knowledge.

Next week ASAs begin.  In particular, students wishing to take part in Cross Country or Athletics need to be aware of the practice days, as we did not have PW this week. Here are the practice days:

Tuesdays (3:30 – 4:30 p.m.):  Athletics

Wednesdays (3:30 – 4:30 p.m.): Cross Country

These practices are in preparation for two upcoming meets (the only ones for this cycle):

Cross Country: Thursday May 16th @ Green School 9am-11am

Athletics: Friday May 31st *Location TBD 8:30am-2:15pm

We wish you an excellent long weekend and look forward to having all of our students back with us next wek.

Best regards,

The Grade 5 Team
