Short School Week & Updated Academic Calendar

Following Ibu Leslie Medema’s announcement last week, a quick reminder regarding next year’s Academic Calendar: The Indonesian Government declared June 1st as Pancasila Day. This day celebrates the birth of Indonesia’s philosophical foundation in 1945. It is a new national holiday celebrated in 2017 for the first time. Further, Vesak day was moved from May 10 to May 11th by the government after our school calendar was announced.

These two dates: May 11th and June 1st are no longer school days and have been changed on the calendar that you can find here and on the parents page (password: AcademicYear2016_17).

The Real Thing – Authentic Learning

What’s the chit chat that goes on around the Green School teachers ‘water cooler’? I’m glad you asked!  Standing at the coffee warung (counter to the watercooler), I hear some of the most inspiring and engaging moments happening in education today.  This week, I share with you one of these discussions; a thought piece from Pak Jesse Driver about authentic learning at Green School.  –Ibu Leslie

In the United States growing up, I was exposed to a marketing campaign by one of the major sugar-water companies.  This particular company was marketing its product as “The Real Thing.”  Do your remember it?  It is a powerful message, and it draws our attention to a basic human need.  We need realness and authenticity in our lives.  As humans, we are not satisfied with fake and contrived experiences.  We will always be unsatisfied with impostors, frauds, and counterfeits.  We want the real thing.  We need the real thing.

Real education then is of utmost importance to any community that values people and learning.  This type of education, authentic education, is very easy to define.  It is when you really learn something, when you really grow, when you really change.  Probably all of us can think back to a time or experience where we were changing and growing into who we are today.  Some of these memories are painful, some are joyous, but we  remember those particular life moments for their “realness” and that’s what made those moments truly matter.

When people are asked to ‘remember their favorite teacher’ while growing up, almost all adults have an immediate answer.  Rarely can people recall a specific lesson plan from their favorite teacher, but always people remember how that teacher made them feel.  Favorite teachers are the educators that made their students feel valued and capable.  The way that favorite teachers create this feeling is through creating authentic, honest, and real opportunities for students to grow and change.   Then they encourage the students to make the leap.  Those students that make the real leap will be different once they land.  They will have internalized that they can do “it”, whatever “it” may be.  The range and diversity among authentic learning experiences available at Green School is astounding.

All around Green School, students are going through those authentic moments of learning, growth, and change.  We know authentic learning happens by seeing it and hearing it all around the campus.   We can see it in the facial expressions of engaged children whether they are demonstrating mastery of a skill or being pushed by new challenges.  We can hear it when we ask them questions, and then listen to what they say about their experiences.  Authentic learning is the easiest learning to ‘assess’ for anyone, because it is just recognizing change and growth.  When it is real change, it is easy to see.

We recognize that our relationships, communities, economies, and the environment we live in are in desperate need of people capable of growth and change.  It is our hope that authentic learning and change starts here at this school and in this community.  We hope what is started here will spread far beyond borders and far into the future.  We know that authentic learning experiences can truly last a lifetime and be source of continual inspiration and growth.  We know that personal growth and change can spread to community growth and change, and from there, it can spread a great deal more.

Many years into the future, in quiet moments of reflection, Green School learners will think back to this place and this time.  They will think to themselves “that mattered a great deal.”  And we know that this will be the case, because real growth and change are happening now.  Authentic learning at the Green School is widespread and growing.  We can see and hear the future today.

Green School’s Traveling Semester program is back home after a four month journey through Indonesia, Greece, Italy, and Morocco. Join us at the final GS Assembly for 2016, where we will be recounting our travels through song, theatre, film and stories. Our semester’s theme was “The Rise and Fall of Civilisation Past and Present”. We focused on learning about triumphs as well as threats and injustices taking place in our world and telling the stories of the heroes we met along the way, dedicating their lives to making the world a more just and secure place. We are journalists, filmmakers, and performers and we are looking forward to sharing our stories with you – our Green School community. Look out for another short presentation at our final school assembly.

Full Moon Ceremony

Tuesday, December 13, 2016

8:30 until 9:00am, Eastern Part of Heart of School

Purnama, or full moon is a Balinese special ceremony day which takes place once a month. On this blissful day, hundreds of ceremonies are held in all corners of the island to honor the gods with beautiful Balinese offerings. Primary Green School as a part of a Bali community enriches and shares these unique experiences with our students.

Purnama ceremony exposes students to local cultural, religious, backgrounds and in so doing provide the opportunity for students to develop a greater understanding of diversity – both in Bali and worldwide. This allows students to interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves and to participate in new and unique experiences beyond their own communities. By experiencing this ceremony, we hope that it assists students to develop positive relationships with others, understand a broader range of perspectives, and develop the knowledge and skills needed for participation in our multicultural community, especially here at Green School.

Time to Strengthen The Connection!

KKC team will keep the school buzzing over the coming holidays, to facilitate cooperation with local schools and establish a harmonious relationship to develop a sustainable educational community. KKC will host a 3 days workshop on Living Values Education (LVE).

It is a way of conceptualizing education that promotes the development of values-based learning communities, and places the search for meaning and purpose at the heart of education. The workshop offers a training and practical methodology for educators from up to 20 neighbouring schools at various learning neighborhood (SD-SMA) and will be held on 19-21 January.

KKC will also initiate a formal cooperation between Green School and local schools by proposing to formally send their students to join the KKC Learning Program (an after-school English & Eco-literacy learning program for local students who live around our campus). By taking this step, KKC strives to embody the GS mission by establishing a broader community of learners making our world sustainable.

KemBali Ke Sekolah (KemBali to School)

KemBali Ke Sekolah is a project of KemBali to replicate the program in schools all around Bali. We have been busy working on a module for other schools to implement the system. This week, we are very excited to announce that we will install KemBali separation bins in SD N 1 Sayan. It will separate 6 categories of recycling: organic, paper, plastic bottles, plastic glasses, plastic bags, and sampah or non recyclable. On Wednesday, we started with education for grade 3 to 6 about waste categories and management.

The next one will be in SMP N 3 Abiansemal, located in Sibang Kaja, where we are going to have KemBali replicated in the school. Their students association and a group of students environmentalists are excited to take over KemBali in their school. Kindly visit our facebook page and instagram to get updates on our exciting upcoming projects!

And, before the year ends, we remind you to start sorting your belongings! Anytime KemBali is open, drop your preloved goods to KemBali, because your stuff might be treasure to others! KemBali operational hours: Monday – Friday, 08.00 – 15.00 WITA.

Japan Fest At Green School

Thank you to the community for sharing their absolute beauty and care for every detail at last week’s Japan Fest. There was excellent food, tea ceremony, delicious plum liquor and sake, delightful colors everywhere and the constant smiles. We hope this is the beginning of a greater movement at Green School to celebrate and share our great diversity of communities and cultures.  Which community will we celebrate and share next?
