07.00 – 09.00 : Preparation for the Ceremony
09.30 – 10.30 : Communal ceremony

11:00 – 12.00 : Lunch and clean up
What is Saraswati day? Have you heard about Saraswati day?
Yup, Saraswati day is a knowledge day. It is dedicated to celebrating the knowledge to the Hindu Goddess Saraswati, a representation of wisdom and insight. It is held every six months (210 days) on Watugunung (the last week of the Balinese calendar). On the following morning is called Banyu Pinaruh when Balinese people go to the beach to clean their body.
What do we prepare for Saraswati celebration?
Green School is a unique school full of culture diversity. We all come from different countries in the world and we all share our cultures in variety ways. And special for Saraswati day, the ceremony is usually held at the school temple with various offerings as well as Balinese dance performances. We have been busy making some beautiful offerings, Gebogan and Kwangen that will be shared with you tomorrow as part of the ceremony.
Gebogan is a fruit tower offering with cakes, traditional crackers, decorated with flowers and sampiyan (special decoration made out of young banana leaf). It was fun learning how to make Gebogan. We arranged the fruits looking at the colours as well as sizes on the dulang (the base for Gebogan). Then on the top of the fruit tower the big round cake and sampiyan. We also learnt more Bahasa Indonesian fruit vocabularies for example, pisang (banana), jeruk (orange), kue (cake) etc.
Sampiyan for Gebogan
Kwangen offering is made out of banana leaves in a cone shape with special sampiyan decoration and beautiful rainbow flowers. It was a bit challenging to put the flowers inside the cone but also fun, we loved making Kwangen. Look at our Kwangen!
Drama class always brings a big smile to all of us here which allows us to begin to understand who we are, listen to other’s perspective and work in a team. This week, we continued to listen to and act like kancil (mouse deer). Guess, what we are going to perform for our Early Years Indonesian Assembly?
Yes, Si Kancil dan Harimau (The Mouse Deer and the Tigers). What is it about? Hhmm, this is a funny story about the clever mouse deer tricked tigers many times because tigers wanted to eat him.
Don’t miss it! Kindy and Starling will be on the stage as well. It is Wednesday, May 22nd at 9 o’clock in front of Kindy classroom. See you there!
“I’m not a chef. But I’m passionate about food – the tradition of it, cooking it, and sharing it”
– Zac Posen-
Cooking can be a mindfulness activity too. This week, we cooked tofu soup with carrot, potato, onion, garlic, tomato, and celery. It was super yummy. We put our whole attention to practice cutting as well as chopping the different texture of the food. We happily ate it with rice noodle, yum…
“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”
–The Bhagavad Gita
Not only, fine motor skill, we also practiced our gross motor skill in PW class as well as having yoga class. We were challenged to move in a fun way with lots and lots of cool games. We creatively made up our own yoga poses then taught them to our friends.
“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” Martha Graham
“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”
Monday mornings has been a fabulous time in Geckos and Starlings with Grade 1 joining us for book sharing, reading and listening. Grade 1 also love the chance to play with our toys inside as well as outside in the playground – such a special sharing Teman Teman (friendship) time.
How do you take care of the animals and plants?
Here, we love to be in the nature exploring every single living creature and living plants – What have we observed this week ? – red ants were everywhere around us, just watch out, they might think we are an enormous giant walking on their house! Grasshoppers were also hopping on the green grass with their family, some of them were green and some were brown, why is that?
We also saw a little moth, sitting quietly on along on a twig. We shared thoughts about what it could be doing ? What is happening with its wings ? How long will it stay there ? We had cute little doggy as a mystery guest. Full of joy, we played all around the playground, taught the dog to play hula hoops and shared our food to the dog.
Fridays start with cool dancing and singing in our music class. Lately we all obsessed with “Apple and Banana” song. Ask us to sing it, you would love it! It is all about eating apples and bananas which let us change the vocal on the words for example,
I like to eat eat eat apple and banana…
I like to ate, ate, ate ay-ples and ba-nay-nays
Playing is a journey of making friends
