Making Biodiesel at Lengis Hijau

This week in “Not Ridin’ Diry” we went to Lengis Hijau to learn how to make Biodiesel.  This process is called Transesterification.  After learning much about biofuels from the awarding winning documentary “Fuel” by Josh Tickell, students could realize that the fuel that we make requires little input energy, does not complete with land for crops, and is a zero waste approach.  Even the glycerine byproduct is used to make soap!  Win win… almost.  Some of the students were shocked to realize that the used cooking oil that we use to make biodiesel is upwards of 90% Palm Oil.  This sparked some interesting discussion on the way back from the biodiesel plant.  What do you think about this
