Primary Update (Week Beginning April 13)
Dear Lower School Parents:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
― Rainer Maria Rilke
Dear Primary families: As we all find our own version of trying to love the questions and find solace amidst the uncertainty, we are deeply grateful for your kind words and cooperative spirits. We truly are in this together. Since the official decision by the Indonesian government to close school until at least the end of May, all of our efforts, families and educators alike, to make Green School Everywhere an exceptional mode of education will have the opportunity to continue to evolve, with ongoing improvements and adjustments. Here are some updates:
WHOOSH FOR THABO
Please send a whoosh for Pak Thabo and his family. He was diagnosed with Dengue Fever late last week. We are wishing him a speedy recovery and will certainly miss his support, expertise, and presence.
As per the email we sent you, we have ensured all of our Zoom meetings now require passwords for everyone’s safety. The email includes the passwords and the following document includes the Zoom links and meeting IDs, along with teacher emails.
As such, links and passwords will remain consistent.
We are aware that there have been many challenges getting onto zoom calls, especially in the afternoons (Bali time). We know that it is painful to watch your child struggle when he/she is so eager to join the class. We will continue to improve and it will never be perfect. We plan to keep the waiting room feature for security. There is an opportunity here to build resilience. There is much talk about grit and this learning may present itself in unexpected ways.
For Child Protection purposes, we are not able to share any Zoom recordings.
We appreciate those of you who have sent some feedback, harnessed from some of the parent Whatsapp conversations. Please know that a school-wide survey is forthcoming. REQUEST: As you have ideas to share, please send to leadership instead of teachers directly, if possible. Any improvements we make will be made across all the grades, so it works better if we receive it. Thank you.
COFFEE TALKS are a great way to share ideas and ask questions. Tuesdays 9am Bali time. See Green School Essentials calendar for link.
You will notice a decrease in the volume of work being presented to students this week, in response to your feedback. We all get to re-define what is most important given that the number of minutes a child can focus is likely lower under these circumstances. In other ways, the elimination of classroom distractions is a terrific opportunity for some quality improvements on certain tasks. Our focus will hone in on Green School skills since these are arguably the most vital capacities our children will need for the unknown future they face. Mandatory activities will be reduced and you are welcome to do as many or as few of the optional activities offered in the Homeroom and Specialist Learning Menus. If your child goes off in a different direction, POST THIS onto Seesaw. I am sure our educators will be able to identify a GS skill or IRESPECT value inherent in your child’s self directed experiences.
INDEPENDENT TASKS-teachers include tasks that we hope children are able to do independently, however, every child is different and these don’t always “hit the mark”. It can be frustrating for you as you navigate siblings, your own work and household reality. Let your classroom teachers know the tasks that “work”, so we can continue to improve.
We want Green School Everywhere to be accessible, well, everywhere! As such, we are creating more opportunities during different times for our students around the world. Our Homeroom teachers are creating new opportunities for 30 minute Zoom sessions on different topics and we will be organizing and posting these late this week to begin next week. Secondly, since our Specialist times will not be changing, we are asking for MORE VIDEOS from teachers to share lessons with everyone. In the meantime, every child should have been in touch with his/her teacher for a 15 check in. If your child has not had this opportunity, please email us. As mentioned above, we cannot share Zoom recordings for Child Protection purposes.
We are trying to streamline our processes to reduce the number of emails you are receiving. Please let us know how we are doing.
With much love and gratitude,
Ibu Kris and the Primary Team
