Dear Parents and Friends,
It has been another fun-filled and busy week with lots of learning happening in Starlings. Even though we have split the classes into 2, we will continue to work and play together many times every day. This week only, Starlings Puith and Starlings Merah have created separate blogs. In future, there will be one blog for all of the Starlings community. In the morning at drop-off, please take your child to their respective classroom first to unpack their bags. After this, children may choose to play in the playground or in either of the Starlings’ classrooms.
“The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship.” ~William Blake~
What a busy and fun week we had! This week the Starlings were introduced to a new thematic unit entitled “Sense of Place”. They started to discuss “What is a nest?” and “What is your favorite nest?”. Would you like to hear some of the Starlings Putih ideas? Here are some samples of their discussions:
“I saw bird nest. There were birds that laid the eggs.”
“And the eggs hatched.”
“It hatched into a chick!”
“A crocodile nest”
“Barracuda nest. Barracuda nest is under the ocean… the deep deep sea.”
“Toys. My favorite place, play with toys.”
The children concluded that a nest is a place that is safe and comfortable. The Starlings also explored more by listening and discussing the stories of “Three Little Bunny” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”.
What is a nest?
What is your favorite nest?
The Starlings went to the chicken coop and the rabbit house. When the children approached the rabbit house, some rabbits were afraid and they ran under the ground, to the burrow. The rabbits hide there so people can’t see them. It is a small hole that fits the rabbits but not enough space for a human. The chicken coop has a triangle shape on the top as the roof. Some of the chickens ran away up the hill when the Starlings came. The hill is another safe place for the chickens. All the houses have gates to keep the animals safe.
After reflecting on what they saw during the nature walk, the Starlings Putih realized that a nest is also a place for a shelter. They found that each animal has a different house. Their houses are different but all houses are safe and comfortable for the animals. Every house is varied because every house has specific functions based on the animal’s needs.
Ibu Devi and Ibu Susan told a bilingual fairy tale entitled “Asal Mula Rumah Siput” (The Origin of Snail’s House) both in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
Teman – Teman
The Starlings Putih started our Teman-Teman Class with Grade 2 this week. In their first meeting, the Starlings Putih showed their favorite place and activity in their “nest” to our beloved Grade 2 Putih friends. Starlings are a type of bird so we pretend that our classroom is our nest.
Jalan – Jalan
The Starlings had an art collaboration activity in Jalan-Jalan with Ibu Gena (the Primary art teacher) and Grade 5. We worked on a mural together.
The Starlings made a traditional cake from Bali called “Jaje Laklak” in cooking class.
Preparing the ingredients:
The Starlings smelled “Daun Suji” and “Daun Pandan”. These leaves make natural coloring which can be used for cooking and also adds some additional flavor.
Shredded the coconut:
Stirred the mixture:
Poured the mixture into the pan:
And.. tadaa~ Jaje Laklak is ready to eat.
We would like to say thank you to all of the families who were able to come to the Early Years Potluck Breakfast last Wednesday. It was so fun to mingle and meet other families from our Learning Neighborhood. Thank you!
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure to seek.”~Joseph Campbell~
Ibu Nicolene invited the Starlings to hunt for treasure from nature. She had a treasure hunt box and all the Starlings were able to put the treasure that they found on the way to the Green Studies nest from our nest (our classroom).
“The most memorable days usually end with the dirtiest clothes.”~Kristen Welch, We are THAT family, from “THAT WORKS FROM ME”.~
Ibu Pera with her special caterpillar told the story while introducing the names of plant leaves.
The Starlings played “Yoga Traffic Light” with Ibu Cherry. So much fun!
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.” ~Jim Rohn.
Ibu Jamie brought a special musical instrument called Djembe into our classroom. Wow, it was a big Djembe! Do you know that one of our Starlings Putih friends has the same first 2 letters in his name as Djambe? Can you guess who is it?
“To assist a child, we must provide him with an environment which will enable him to develop freely.”
Magic dough using cornstarch:
The Starlings did hammering. WOW!
Playing with the screwdrivers was fun!
Thank you Ibu Dita, Pak Baxter, Ibu Rai, and Ibu Diana for inviting us and playing with us!
