Dear Parents and friends,
Where are our nests?, What is around our nest? What do our nests look, sound, smell, and feel like? Do all animals have a nest?, What are the names of the nests for different types of animals?, How do they make their nests? and Where are they?
These are some of the big questions that we have focused on this week! With the idea that our classroom is our nest at school, the children have been exploring and discussing zones found within it. They shared their feelings about this “nest” and shared about their favourite places within. They also offered some ideas about how to make their “nest” a safe and happy place. Ibu Lorraine read the story of “The Three Little Pigs” and we thought more about what makes a house safe. The children enjoyed listening to the story and found things from the class and the garden that they used to build their own house. They got blocks, bricks, crystals, leaves, sticks and stones and then explained how they could make a house with their chosen materials. In Starling Putih, the children read and then created a puppet show of “The Three Little Pigs” and also did a role play. It was fantastic seeing all the children coming up with ideas, sharing their knowledge and using their creativity to make houses using recycled materials. They also made a plan for their house that showed which rooms were next to each other. They also used milk cartons, painting and cutting them to create beautiful houses.
We intend to create many more things using recycled materials and we need your help.
Could you please send in any boxes, bottle lids, cardboard rolls, containers, sticks or anything else you think we can turn into creative works of art.
During a nature walk, the children continued their observations of animals’ nests (homes). We visited the ducks, looked at fish and searched for frogs. We also got to watch a little of the BSSA soccer tournament on the field, cheering our Green School athletes and the athletes from the other schools! Go Garuda…..!!!
On Tuesday morning, Starling Merah made tofu satay. This satay is made with broccoli, carrots, tofu, flour, onions, garlic powder, pepper and salt. We mixed all of the ingredients and made a dough. The children formed balls with their hands and stuck it on a lemongrass skewer for added flavour… so yum! The children and the teachers liked it a lot! Starling Putih made macaroni and cheese. The children helped to grate the cheese and mixed it with macaroni, milk and oregano leaves. We then baked it in the oven. The children learnt about the smell, taste and texture of the ingredients. They also practiced the Indonesian words for the ingredients, such as wortel (carrot), keju (cheese) and bawang (onion).
During P.E., Starling Merah danced, ran and lifted their knees high to the music and then needed to find a hula hoop and freeze when the music stopped. Then the children were divided into three groups and took turns practicing jumping skills, bouncing a ball and walking with good balance. In P.E. class with Pak Garrett, the Starling Putih also did three stations too! They practiced jumping and target shooting with the bean bag and bouncing a ball! So much fun!
We continued our Teman-Teman programme with Grade 2 Merah and Putih and are seeing friendships beginning to be built. This week, we visited our buddies in their classrooms and the Starlings colored the pictures of animals that their buddies drew for them last week.
In Green studies class with Ibu Nicolene and Ibu Pera, the Starlings found some cardboard from Kembali and collected some green fallen leaves in the garden. They cut the cardboard into rectangle shapes, put the leaves between the pieces of cardboard and then tied them tightly with string to press them. The Starlings hung them on the bamboo and will wait until next week to find out what the leaves will look like.
On Friday, the children planted cauliflower, eggplants and pakchoy seeds in eggshells. They used worm casting, which we got from Pak Wayan, the gardener, for the soil. They were so excited to see the worms and told the teachers that the worms will help the plants to grow. Ibu Kiki helped to write their name on the eggshell and now they need to wait about 2-3 days for the seeds to grow. Fingers crossed that we will see shoots on Monday.
In Bahasa and Budaya Indonesia, we made traditional houses from Papua. They are called “Rumah Honai” and are made from reeds.
Next week, we are continuing our thematic focus on “A Sense of Place”.
We are continuing to explore the idea of “nests”. Continuing to discuss our own home (nest). Exploring what it looks like, sounds like, smells like. Beginning to explore why our home is a special place for us.
