Dear Parents and Friends,
Welcome back to school. We hope all of you had a fun and relaxing mid-semester break. We are excited to be back and starting Term 2. Our first thematic unit this term is “Gifts From The Earth”. In this unit, we will explore and learn about all the wonderful things that Mother Earth provides for us. We will explore the many ways we can use these gifts and how important it is for us to care for these amazing gifts, such as plants, animals, the sun, water, soil, rivers, oceans, mountains, etc. If you find a gift from Mother Earth at your home or on your travels that you think we could use in this unit, please bring it to school for us to explore and learn about it.
In Green Studies with Ibu Nicolene and Ibu Pera, the Starlings had so much fun learning about how we take care of the school pigs by scrubbing the pigs with water and brushes to keep them clean as well as feeding them with left over vegetables. The children also had an opportunity to feed and hang out with the school chickens. The children were so brave and nice with the pigs and the chickens. Look what else we found….a baby rhino beetle!
This week, Starlings Merah made “es buah” during cooking class. “Es” means ice and “buah” means fruit so es buah is Indonesian fruit salad with ice cubes. The Starling Merah’s es buah was made from avocado, apple, dragonfruit, melon and ice cubes. The children practiced their fine motor skills and eye hand co-ordination as they carefully cut the fruit. We used cheese and honey as the topping. It was so tasty and the children ate a lot.
The Starlings visited the vortex and the Ayung river during the Nature Walk on Wednesday. We were looking for some gifts from the earth. We found so many. There were leaves, sticks, flowers and rocks to collect as well as tamarind to sample. We also discovered a wonderful place to play in the river where the low water level left a sand bar to dig in and rocks to climb. We had so much fun playing with the sand and paddling in the water. When we got back to our classrooms, we sorted our treasures into groups and then made simple graphs. We used lots of Mathematical skills, such as counting, comparing group size and numbers.
During Thematics, the Starlings Putih used a globe and an atlas to help us learn more about what the earth looks like. They took turns to hold the globe and we helped them to find a country of their choice. After that, we made our own map with everyone making their own island or country with flowers and we also decorated a world map with some rocks that they had painted blue and green on Monday.
On Friday, the Starlings celebrated Diwali. Diwali, Divali, Deepavali or Dipavali is a four to five day-long festival of lights, which is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists every autumn in the northern hemisphere. One of the most popular festivals of Hinduism, Diwali symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.” Light is a metaphor for knowledge and consciousness. During the celebration, temples, homes, shops and office buildings are brightly illuminated.
The Early Years classes were divided into mixed grade groups. There were four groups, Rama, Sita, Hanuman and Ravana. Those groups were named for the characters from the famous Hindu story called “Ramayana”. Each group visited four stations. The stations were Flower Rangoli, Candle Craft Activity, Ramayana Drama & Dance and Decorating Elephant. We had a wonderful time working alongside children from other classes and grades.
Please pack your children a hat every day.
We are inviting parents to be Starlings’ Mystery Guests to share a gift from the earth.
